What's going on in SCIENCE?

We have been learning about solids, liquids and gasses.
Did you know that everything in the world is either a solid, liquid or gas - even us!
Today we looked at supermarket items and talked about whether they are a solid, liquid or gas. We are getting better at identifying what is which, but it's fun to practise! See what solids, liquids, and gasses you can find at home!

The video below is a song about solid, liquids and gases. Check it out!

What's new in our blog?

I have just added a new gadget to our blog called 'Cool Links'. You can find it down the right hand side of our blog right under our class picture. Click on a link to go to a particular game or video. I have added the Mummy Addition Game and the Skip Counting Rap Song so you can practise your maths at home! You will also see a link for online reading books - you can choose to read and listen to a fiction or non-fiction book.
Keep checking in to see what new links are added!

What's happening in reading? 20/05/2011

In reading, quite a few people have moved around the reading garden - congratulations to them - I'm so proud of you and all your progress!

This week we have been doing some fun reading activities around our books. The Willy Wonkas and Wild Things read a book all about birds. They read about roosters, peacocks and endangered birds. On Thursday they were very clever and made hens all by themselves by following the instructions in the book! On Friday, the Willy Wonkas and Wild Things also performed a play called Eggs, Eggs, Eggs to the rest of the class. They were all a different character and were very good at changing their voices!
Have a look at the picture below of the rocking hens they made.

On Monday, the Rainbow Fish read a book called 'Sam's Painting.' In the story Sam paints her house and her dog, Bingo. On Tuesday the Rainbow Fish got to paint their own pictures of their houses and pets - they looked absolutely beautiful. Have a look below at their amazing work.

Super science!

On Wednesday we did some more science experiments. We are learning to make predictions about what we think might happen and then compare what we thought with what really happened.

We looked at mixing materials. First we mixed blue food colouring and water. We predicted what might happen. Some of us thought the water would change colour to blue. Others of us thought it might bubble or fizz. When we mixed together the water and food colouring it did change colour - to blue! It was really funny to see it mix together because it starting swirling and wobbling round the cup until it all mixed in..

Look at it swirl!
Then we decided to mix our blue water with cooking oil. We predicted what might happen:
  • It might start to fizz - Cohen
  • It might look bubbly - Celestine
  • It might try to come out of the bottle - Misha, Piper
  • It might turn yellow like the oil - Alexander
  • It might turn green because when you mix blue and yellow you get green - Mia, Lucy
This is what happened when we first poured the oil into the blue water.
We could see lots of bubbles at the top.
This is the water and oil after we shook the bottle up to mix them together.
It went foamy and bubbly on the top but the oil wouldn't mix into the water. It just sat on top!

So what did we learn? Not all materials will mix together. And why? Liquids will always arrange themselves according to weight. Heavier, thicker liquids sink to the bottom and lighter liquids float. The oil is lighter than the water so when you try to mix them together the oil sits on top!

Blend this week - 'ch'

The blend we are focusing on this week is 'ch'

Today we made a list of all the 'ch' words we could think of and there are lots of them! Have a look at the list in class to see what we came up with. We even thought of a word with 3 ch's in it - CHRISTCHURCH!

The video below explains why Clever Cat and Harry Hat Man make a "ch" sound when they are next to each other...

Our Awesome Writing - 15/05/2011

Today we started with writing about our weekend. We are learning to use describing words and add more detail to make our writing more exciting. We also talked about how changing the start of our story can make it more interesting to read. Have a look at some great weekend adventures below:

I had a very nice weekend because I played soccer and my team won and my team was Brazil and I got two goals. - Riley

On Saturday I went to my Nana and Poppa's and I went to the park. At night I went in my Nana and Poppa's spa pool. There were lights everywhere and there were jets. - Brooke C.

On Sunday morning I was nagging for play station, Mum and Dad said No! We said "Oh man." so we played Lego land then they let me. - Alexander

What an awesome weekend! On Saturday I went to my friends house. I also made a slot car set all by myself. - Chester

Week 2, Term 2

What a busy week we have had! On Monday we started learning about adjectives and how to use them in our writing to describe things and make them more exciting! On Wednesday Miss Martin showed us how to use the Mimio to make our white board come to life! We can do really cool things with our special Mimio pen - even our roll! On Thursday we did some more exciting, describing writing. We wrote about the Gingerbread Man. First we did a brainstorm of adjectives that could describe him. Our writing was great - We are getting good at describing things. We also watched a special video of Gingerbread Men doing the Haka! It was so cool and funny! See the video below...

We are looking forward to another great week next week. We will be getting fit for cross country and doing some interesting science activities.

Welcome back!

Welcome back to term 2! We have an exciting first week coming up with lots of fun science activities to do - check in soon to see what we have been learning. :-)
